The flow monitor has an insert (2) with a support member (3) which moves relative to a shut-off body (4). An adaptor (5) has outer dimensions which are matched to the inner dimensions of the pipe (6). The inner dimensions of the adaptor are matched to the outer dimensions of the insert. The edge of the insert is sealingly connected to the internal surface of the adaptor. Independent claims are included for an adaptor, and for a connecting device.
