Preparation of 3-hydroxy-gamma -butyrolactone involves hydrogenating optically active 4-substituted oxy-3-hydroxybutyrate, in the presence of a heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst and an acidic substance, followed by deprotection and simultaneous ring closure. Preparation of 3-hydroxy-gamma -butyrolactone of formula (I) involves hydrogenating optically active 4-substituted oxy-3-hydroxybutyrate of formula R2>OCH2CH(OH)CH2CO2R1> (II) in the presence of a heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst and an acidic substance, followed by deprotection and simultaneous ring closure. [Image] R1>1-4C alkyl; and R2>hydroxyl-protecting group removable by hydrogenation with a heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst. An independent claim is also included for the preparation of (II) involving hydrogenating a 4-substituted oxy-3-oxobutyrate of formula R2>OCH2CH(=O)CH2CO2R1> in the presence of a ruthenium complex comprising an optically active phosphine compound as a ligand.
