MATERIAL FOR GLAND PACKING AND THE GLAND PACKING

A band-like base member (4) is formed by providing a reinforcement member (20) constructed from a fiber material (2) on at least one side of band-like expanded graphite (3). The base member (4) is twisted to form a cord-like body (40). The outside of the cord-like body (40) is covered by part of the band-like expanded graphite (3), and the whole of the reinforcement member (20) and the remaining part of the band-like expanded graphite (3) are enwound inside the cord- like body (40). A large number of openings (20A) are formed in the reinforcement member (20), and the band-like expanded graphite (3) is faced to the openings (20A). Joining force between the band-like expanded graphite (3) and the reinforcement member (20) is strengthened by joining the band-like expanded graphite (3) to the openings (20A). A gland- packing material (1) has a high tensile strength given by a fiber material and is easily knitted or twisted. The gland-packing material (1) has a high shape-keeping ability, and exerts sealing ability that an inside reinforcement structure inherently has. The gland-packing material (1) requires less amount of an adhesive agent, and degradation of sealing ability caused by hardening of or burning down of an adhesive agent can be avoided.
