The transfer device (1) has a suction head with at least one suction cup and an associated drive (9), e.g.a servomotor, used for movement of the suction head into alignment with an object at the delivery station (4) and subsequent movement of the suction head with the object to a relatively spaced reception station. The drive has a force control for detecting the contact between the suction head and the object at the delivery station using the power requirement of the drive.
