A method and system for archiving and retrieving a markup language data stream

A method, system, and program product for the archiving of a markup language document such as XML. The method includes the steps of: identifying at least one referenced resource in the document; determining if the at least one identified referenced resource is stored in a storage device; and in response to an unsuccessful determining step, storing the at least one identified referenced resource in the storage device. The referenced resources may be style sheets, data type definitions or images. If the referenced resource is already stored in the archive, the resource is not stored again.
