A composite socket member for a residual limb comprises an outer socket (20) which defines an inner cavity (22) generally conforming to the outer surface of a residual limb; an inner socket (40) which defines an inner cavity (42) conforms to the shape of said outer socket, and when nested within the cavity of the outer socket, defines an airspace (33) between the inner surface of the outer socket and the outer surface of the inner socket; and an inflatable bladder (30) disposed between the inner surface (28) of the outer socket and the outer surface of the inner socket. The inner socket (60) contains at least one flex area (74, 76, 78) in its sidewall at a pre-selected weight bearing location whereby upon inflation of said bladder, pressure is applied by the bladder against the sidewall at the pre-selected weight bearing location of the residual limb. A method for making the composite socket member is also disclosed. |
