A solid charge, which may consist of scrap and pig iron, or entirely of scrap together with a suitable carburizing agent, is melted and refined by combusting a mixture of hydrocarbon fuel and oxygen, combustion being maintained throughout the refining stage. The burner is initially located so that the flame is in contact with the charge, and is then moved down into the latter until a pool of molten metal forms, when the burner is gradually withdrawn upwards. During refining the bath temperature is controlled by the rate of fuel combustion while the rate of carbon removal is independently controlled by the supply of excess oxygen over that required by the fuel.
|
