A crankcase ventilating valve 26 in a pipe connecting the crankcase to the inlet manifold comprises a spring-loaded pin A drawn by suction towards an orifice 41, the head 45 of the pin passing into the orifice at idling suction to throttle the flow of crankcase gases, higher suction at overrunning pulling the head right through the orifice, to permit an increased flow of gases to reduce the suction in the manifold. The head 36 of the pin is forced against a seat 31 if a backfire occurs.
