Forming a thermal protection coating on a superalloy substrate comprises forming a bonding sublayer comprising an intermetallic compound of alpha-nickel-platinum and aluminum, and anchoring a ceramic coating to an alumina film on the sublayer. An independent claim is also included for a gas turbine part comprises a superalloy substrate, a bonding sublayer as above and an external ceramic coating anchored to an alumina film formed on the sublayer.
