It is possible to provide a handwriting- input device and method capable of inputting a mixture of a character and a graphic without feeling discomfort even when the input area is physically limited. The handwriting-input device includes a display screen having a normalized pencraft input area for inputting a normalized pencraft onto the display screen and a pencraft arrangement area for inputting non-normalized pencraft and displaying a normalized pencraft. The device at least includes coordinate input means for acquiring coordinate information input by an input medium and input area judgment means for judging whether a pencraft is input to the normalized pencraft input area or to the pencraft arrangement area according to the coordinate information and inputs the pencraft according to the judgment result in the input area judgment means.
