Process for the preparation of synthetic metallated bacterio chlorophyll derivatives of formula (M)-BChl (I) involves: (a) reacting an appropriate bacterio pheophytin derivative dissolved in DMF with dehydrated Cd acetate in an Ar atmosphere and recovering the (Cd)-BChl complex from the reaction mixture by chromatography under reducing conditions; (b) reacting the (Cd)-BChl complex dissolved in dry acetone with an appropriate dehydrated metal M salt (chloride, acetate or acetylacetonate) in an Ar atmosphere; and (c) recovering (I) from the reaction mixture. In the formula, BChl = the residue of a de-metallated natural or synthetic bacterio chlorophyll derivative having a group -COOR1 at position 173; R1 = 1-25C hydrocarbon residue; and M = a metal of ionic radius smaller than that of Cd (95 pm), divalent metals palladium, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc and manganese, trivalent metals iron, manganese and chromium and tetravalent metals tin or platinum. Also claimed is the process where (I) is subjected to a transesterification process to modify the group at position 173. |
