PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a propulsive excavator and a calculation method of a position of a boring machine capable of obtaining the position of the boring machine in real time. SOLUTION: The boring machine 3 is equipped with a gyro-compass measuring instrument 5 detecting a posture, a linear encoder 7 counting an advanced distance of the boring machine 3 when the boring machine 3 is propelled and a calculation device 11 calculating the position of the boring machine 3 based on output of the gyro-compass measuring instrument 5 and the linear encoder 7. Accordingly, a propulsion course of the boring machine 3 and a current position are found out on the basis of output of the gyro-compass measuring instrument 5 and the linear encoder 7. When one end of an encoder wire 7a possessed by the linear encoder 7 is fixed on a propulsion device 2 side through a repeating wire 10a, the encoder wire 7a for overall length to the propulsion device 2 from the linear encoder 7 need not be prepared.
