The invention relates to a device and a method for the virtual observation of the position of at least one medical instrument introduced into a body. Said device comprises a position detection system that detects the spatial position of the at least one medical instrument, and an image processing unit that generates, on the basis of spatial position information detected by the position detection system, a virtual image of the medical instrument, that can be faithfully reproduced on a visual display unit. The invention is characterised in that the visual display unit is mounted in a spatially displaceable manner, the position detection system detects the spatial position of the visual display unit, and the image processing unit reproduces the virtual image of the medical instrument according to the spatial position of the visual display unit.
