The quick-acting actuator (2) incorporates an elongated coil spring (12) used as an energy store. Its top end engages in an inverted cup (14) with a pin (16) engaging with the end of a lever (44). This is connected to a further lever (46) forming part of an engine cover front lock (4) for a road vehicle. The levers forming the locking mechanism are connected to a release mechanism (24).
