PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multichannel variable optical attenuator in which the degree of location of an optical attenuator, particularly the multichannel variable optical attenuator, is enhanced by realizing a multilayer structure by separating the optical fiber part and the attenuation part of the optical attenuator. SOLUTION: In the optical attenuator, a separation space 39 is formed between an input terminal and an output terminal to adjust the transmission amount of an optical signal, and at least two optical signal transmission lines 40 and 40' are arranged in parallel to each other. A cutoff film 46 is located in the separation space 39 of the optical signal transmission lines 40 and 40' and is so located to be movable in the direction to intersect with the optical signal transmission lines 40 and 40'. Further, a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) actuator 45 is located above the other optical signal transmission line 40' which is adjacent to the optical signal transmission line 40 at which the cutoff film 46 is located, and connected to the cutoff film 46 and moves the cutoff film 46.
