PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of easily/surely coping with trouble, when a light source lamp is burnt out, by incorporating an auxiliary light source in the projector without increasing optical elements. SOLUTION: When the projector 10 is operated in an auxiliary light source mode, R' light emitted from the auxiliary light source 24a is transmitted through a reflection mirror 23i and made incident on an opposed liquid crystal light valve 25a as illuminating light. The illuminating light modulated by the light valve 25a, that is, image light passes through a cross dichroic prism 27 and is made incident on a projection lens 29. The image light of the color R' made incident on the lens 29 is projected on a screen.(Not illustrated) Namely, a color picture is projected on the screen when the projector 10 is operated in an ordinary mode, and a red monochrome picture is projected on the screen when the projector 10 is operated in the auxiliary light source mode.
