PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To transmit enough power to material wood from the start of cutting even when approximately cylindrical material wood is used by a veneer lathe having a rotor rotated in the vicinity of a cutter. SOLUTION: A rotated roller bar 7 is moved to a position contacted with the peripheral surface of the material wood 1 and is made to wait. At the start of cutting by the cutter 3, the roller bar 7 is contacted with the peripheral surface of the material wood 1, and the roller bar 7 is moved in the right direction to the cutter 3 by a signal indicating the start of power transmission from the roller bar 7 to the material wood 1 and moved in turn in the direction to be separated from the material wood 1 in relation to a pressure bar stand 4. When the initial one turn of a spindle 41 is confirmed by a signal from a detector 40, the operation of a variable speed driving source 21 is stopped by a signal from a controller 14, and the position of the roller bar 7 in relation to the pressure bar stand 4 is fixed.
