A process for the production of a vinyl chloride polymer or copolymer (e.g. with vinyl acetate) comprises the polymerization thereof at a temperature of -60 DEG C. to 0 DEG C. by means of a water-soluble redox system (e.g. hydrogen peroxide, ascorbic acid, ferric sulphate) in the presence of an aliphatic alcohol in an amount of 8-20% wt. based on monomer(s) and in the presence of an ether and/or ketone totalling 5-50% wt. based on the alcohol. Solvents used are methanol, diethylether, tetrahydrofuran, dioxane, acetone and cyclohexanone.
