<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator capable of keeping an area to be irradiated with light from a plurality of light source parts at high luminance and uniform, and a projection type picture display device using the illuminator. <P>SOLUTION: The illuminator is equipped with the light source parts 101 and 102 and a relay lens system 4 guiding luminous flux emitted from a rod integrator 1. The rod integrator 1 is a columnar optical device having an incident end face 130F as a top and an emitting end face 130B as a bottom. Assuming that the long side direction of the end face 130B is a horizontal direction and the short side direction thereof is a vertical direction, a pair of opposed side surfaces out of four side surfaces forms a tapered surface where planes are opposed with inclination of a specified angle so that both side surfaces may be separated from each other in the horizontal direction or the vertical direction from the end face 130F to the end face 130B. The light from the light source parts 101 and 102 is converged and radiated to the vicinity of the end face 130B and the light source parts 101 and 102 are arranged by two in the horizontal direction or the vertical direction. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
