COMPOSITION FOR PREVENTION, INHIBITION AND TREATMENT OF OBESITY AND RELATED DISEASES

The use is provided of a combination of a fermentable dietary fibre and a food product for the manufacture of a composition for oral administration or tube feeding for the prevention, the inhibition of the development, and the treatment of obesity and obesity-related diseases in humans and mammals. The composition inhibits the synthesis and/or release and the effects of the appetite-stimulating hormone ghrelin, and provokes a suppression of plasma ghrelin levels that in the post-absorptive period 8 hours after intake is preferably at least 30 % lower than the plasma ghrelin concentration of controls having taken only said food product. Also a method is provided for the prevention, the inhibition of the development, and the treatment of overweight, obesity and obesity-related diseases in humans and mammals. A method is provided too for suppressing plasma ghrelin levels, for inhibiting the synthesis and/or release and the effects of the appetite-stimulating hormone ghrelin, in humans and mammals. The methods involve oral intake or administration through tube feeding of a composition comprising said combination of fermentable dietary fibre and food product.
