Organic esters, contaminated with a titanium alkoxide or catalytic residues thereof, are purified by agitating with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble phosphate, optionally in the presence of a water-immiscible solvent, and separating the organic and aqueous layers. The ester may be the product of an esterinterchange, e.g. between acrolein tetramer and a polyhydroxy compound, e.g. dimethyl phthalate or another ester, in which titanium alkoxide is used as a catalyst, and the titanium is converted to a water-soluble complex containing phosphorus. Esters purified may be long chain esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids and examples describe the treatment of the bis(3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-methyl) ester of phthalic acid, butyl methacrylate, and the ester derived from palm kernel alcohol and methyl methacrylate using sodium dihydrogen phosphate as the washing agent. |
