Viscous oil present in water introduced at (8), Fig. 1 (not shown), coalesces on the downstream side of each of a number of screens (18) to (22) and may be discharged to recovery from a pipe (36). Each screen consists of one or more layers of plain Dutch weave wire mesh. Solids collecting thereon may be removed by backwashing.
