PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Stirling engine superior in operational efficiency. SOLUTION: A Stirling refrigerator has a casing 2, a cylinder 3 installed in the casing 2, a piston 4 and a displacer 5 reciprocating in the cylinder 3, a linear motor 13 for reciprocating the piston 4 in the cylinder 3, a displacer ring 15 for imparting elastic force to the displacer 5 in the casing 2, an operation space 7 contacting with an end surface of the piston 4 on the displacer 5 side, and a back pressure space 17 contacting with an end surface of the piston 4 on the opposite side of the displacer 5 side.
