PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner for a vehicle, improving the engine efficiency by quickly raising the temperature of engine cooling water at the start of heating operation. SOLUTION: This air conditioner 1 for a vehicle is adapted to condition the air in a vehicle cabin. The air conditioner includes: a cabin heat exchanger functioning as an evaporator in cooling operation and functioning as a heater in heating operation; a heater core 22 provided on the downstream side of the cabin heat exchanger and taking the cooling water of an engine 24 as a heat source; an air conditioning mode select means for selecting one air conditioning mode from two or more air conditioning modes set to blow out the air air-conditioned by the cabin heat exchanger and the heater core or the cabin heat exchanger in a predetermined direction in the cabin; and an air mix damper 30 for stopping the function of the heater core when the temperature of the cooling water is a predetermined value or less and the temperature of the outside air is under a predetermined value and functioning the heater core when the temperature of the cooling water is a predetermined value or higher or the temperature of the outside air is a predetermined value or higher in heating operation.
