RAM GUIDANCE SYSTEM

A ram guidance system (2) for a stamping press (8) is provided including an outer bush (25) mounted to a portion (55) of the stamping press. The outer bush (25) has a central passageway (42) sized and arranged so that a reciprocating ram (11, 56) extends through the passageway. An inner bush (28) is coaxially mounted to the outer bush (25) and a portion of the rod (11), with an anti-friction bearing assembly (30) positioned between the outer bush (25) and the inner bush (28) so as to guide their relative movement. In another embodiment of the invention, a metal stamping system for operating a die set is provided that includes an outer bush (28) mounted to a portion of the stamping press (55). The outer bush (28) includes a passageway (42) sized and arranged so that a ram (11, 56) extends through the passageway (42) so as to be enclosed by the outer bush (28). An inner bush (25) is coaxially mounted to (i) the outer bush (28) and (ii) a portion of the ram (11), with an anti-friction bearing assembly (30) positioned between the outer bush (28) and the inner bush (25) so as to guide their relative movement. Tie rods (75) may be used to form a supporting structure of the press (8).
