[Also in Division B2] A film-faced body such as an acoustic tile comprises a rigid porous base 12, a primary surfacing component deposited on a surface 14 of the base and a synthetic resin film 48 forming a covering in intimate contact with every part of the resultant surface but not adhered to the resultant surface. The base is preferably formed of glass fibres adhered together by a thermoplastic resin such as a melamine compound or a thermosetting resin such as phenolformaldehyde. The tile bases 12 are mounted on a conveyer 16 and coating material such as paint is delivered on to a major surface 14 from an applicator roller 24, the amount of coating material being insufficient to coat the surface completely, resulting in a random distribution on the surface 14. The tiles are then passed through a drying oven 42. The tile is then placed on a screen 64 mounted above a chamber 58 in which the pressure may be reduced. The thermoplastic film 48 is supported on a frame 66 and after being heated to a pliable condition is lowered on to the tile and a pressure differential is established between the upper and lower faces of the film, forcing it into intimate contact with the upper surface 14 of the tile. The film may be joined by adhesive to the edge regions 50 of the tile. A design of repetitive character may be stencilled to the upper face 14 of the tile base 12, or the primary component may be provided by a bonded swirl or strand mat. Other primary surface components include a glass textile or fabric, or a layer of chopped strands of glass fibres. Coloured powders or comminuted materials, glass or clay beads may also be deposited on the surface 14 of the base 12. The film 48 may be of polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl fluoride, polyethylene, polycarbonate or polyester films, and may be translucent or transparent or may be white or pigmented.</p> |
