PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable information storage device whose format of a magnetic disk can be dynamically set, and to provide a method for dynamically setting the format and to flexibly perform special functions which use them. SOLUTION: At least two areas are defined in the flash memory 15 of the portable information storage device 1, and an optical disk area and a fixed hard disk area are preset in the respective areas. When the portable information storage device 1 is coupled to a processor of an electronic device, an area with the format of the magnetic disk that is not applied to an operating system adopted by the processor is hidden, corresponding to the specifications of the operating system, whereby only the other areas of the format of the magnetic disk applied to the processor are detected.
