<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the display quality and reliability of a vertical alignment type liquid crystal display wherein the alignment control of a liquid crystal is performed by a protrusion while making its manufacturing process simple. <P>SOLUTION: A protrusion part 28 for controlling the alignment of the liquid crystal is formed by using the same photosensitive material as that of the alignment layer 27 of a substrate 10 on which the protrusion part 28 is disposed. Thereby, problems of peeling and the like between the alignment layer 27 and the protrusion part 28 due to difference between thermal expansion coefficients and the like can be avoided. Since the photosensitive material is used as the material of the alignment layer 27 and the protrusion part 28, patterning can be easily achieved by performing only exposure and development (without performing etching).
