<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable electron emission at a low driving voltage, as to an electron emitting element having a substance acting as an emitter formed by a dielectric. <P>SOLUTION: This electron emitting element 10A1 has a plate-like emitter part 14, a cathode electrode 16 formed on the surface of the emitter part 14, and an anode electrode formed on the rear surface of the emitter part 14. A gap 50 is formed between the peripheral rim part 42 of the cathode electrode 16 and the surface of the emitter part 14.
