PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To greatly save labor and time required for recycling by making the shapes of pieces of recyclable refuse having restitutive force remain as compressed and by enabling pieces of recyclable refuse of different materials to be classified easily. SOLUTION: The volume reduction machine is equipped with a fixing member (31) which fixes one cylindrical side face (71b) of an object (70) to be disposed of and a piercing member (32) which pierces holes in the object (70) from the cylindrical side face (71a) opposite to the fixing member (31), to the cylindrical fixed side face (71b), in a state that the object (70) is fixed by the fixing member (31). The piercing member (32) is designed to form burs so as not to restore the object (70) to the nearly cylindrical shape by making both pierced cylindrical side faces (71a) and (71b) of the object (70) catch each other.
