PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyethylene terephthalate less in the generation of the cyclic trimer at the time of molding and high in transparency. SOLUTION: The polyethylene terephthalate is produced by obtaining a lower-order condensate from terephthalic acid or its ester-formable derivative and ethylene glycol or its ester-formable derivative and subsequently by performing polycondensation in the presence of a germanium compound. When the remaining undissolved part occurring when the surface layer of the chip of the above polyethylene terephthalate is dissolved with an organic solvent is referred to as the inside and its weight is indicated by W1 and its metal catalyst content by M1, when the dissolved part is referred to as the outside and its weight is indicated by W2 and its metal catalyst content by M2, the above signs satisfy the following formulas (1)-(2): W2/(W1+W2)≤0.6 (1) and M2/M1≤0.7 (2).
