The warning device (12) comprises a control loop mounted inside the instrument casing (11) and this loop contains a signal conversion switch for providing an electrical connection with a desired position in the vehicle and for converting a measured value for this position into a first digital signal. A processor (123) receives the first digital signal and uses a program to compare it with a second digital signal and activate at least one light emitting device in a lighting system in order to change the colour of the light from this system so that the driver is made more aware of an important change in vehicle status. A display unit (125) is connected to the processor. An input unit (126) linked to the comparison is used to input data for generating the second digital signal.
