PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for electrolytically plating or electroless-plating aluminum oxide, which has non-complicate treatment steps and is industrially productive, and to provide a liquid for plating aluminum oxide therefor. SOLUTION: The liquid for plating aluminum oxide consists substantially of an alcohol, aluminum ions and nitrate ions dispersed in the alcohol; and specifically comprises 90 to 99.8 mass% alcohol, 0.02 to 10 mass% aluminum nitrate and/or aluminum nitrate hydrate and unavoidable impurities. The above liquid is preferably used for electrolytic plating. The method for coating an electroconductive substrate with an electrolytically oxidized aluminum film employs the above plating liquid.
