PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system that can be quickly and surely restored from failure by initializing only an expansion unit with failure, in spite of a plurality of expansion units being addable. SOLUTION: When expansion units are mounted to the body 2 of a programmable display 1 in the order of expansion units 3 to 4, the control part 21 of the body 2 can access the control parts 31, 41 of the expansion units 3, 4 through a bus 11. Under this condition, if the expansion unit 3 fails, the initialization processing part 24 of the body 2 sends an abort signal and a signal for specifying the expansion unit 3 to the bus 11. The initializing process part 35 of the expansion unit 3 determines whether the specifying signal indicates its own device; if the signal indicates its own device, the initialization processing part 35 initializes the control part 31, and after the initialization is finished, sends an enable signal indicating the end of the initialization to the bus 11.
