PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rod type drilling apparatus which can easily carry out drilling work even when the drilling of a hole on a workpiece is carried out from below upward or toward a furthermore upward deep portion of the workpiece. SOLUTION: The rod type drilling apparatus A comprises a drill chuck 5, a chuck supporting spindle 6 for supporting the drill chuck 5, a transmission mechanism 7 for rotationally driving the chuck supporting spindle 6 by means of a rotationally driving machine RD, a propulsion drive section 8 for propulsively driving the supporting spindle 6, and a reaction force supporting section 100. The chuck 5, the supporting spindle 6, the propulsion drive section 8, and the reaction force supporting section 100 are arranged in series in this order. The transmission mechanism 7 includes a drive gear 71 rotationally driven by the rotationally driving machine RD and a driven gear 72. The driven gear 72 is fitted to the supporting spindle 6 so as to be able to transmit a rotational torque and to allow the axial movement of the supporting spindle 6.
