<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cassette reading device and a cassette reading method capable of imparting optimum handleability for image reading in a cassette for housing a recording medium composed of columnar crystal grown up by a vapor growth method. <P>SOLUTION: In the cassette reading device, the cassette 1 is composed of a front member and a back member, houses a sheet type recording medium having a recording part composed of the columnar crystal formed by the vapor growth method and having thickness within the range of 20μm to 2mm and integrated with the back member on an opposite surface of the recording part, and is constituted so that the front member and the back member relatively attached/detached in nearly the same direction as the growth direction of the columnar crystal. The processing device is equipped with a cassette turning means holding and turning the cassette in the device in the case of performing reading processing of image information from the recording medium in the cassette 1, an attracting means 540 separating the back member from the front member of the cassette turned by the cassette turning means and attracting it so as to perform the reading processing, and a pair of locking parts 41a and 41b locking both corner parts of the cassette in the case of separating the cassette from the attracting means.
