PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical element which is light in weight and small in size, can realize a liquid crystal lens having large diameter with a simple configuration, and has a function for easily electrically controlling the focal length and favorable response characteristics. SOLUTION: This element essentially comprises a liquid crystal cell comprising a liquid crystal layer 14 between a first electrode 11 and a cover substrate 13, a glass lens 15 stacked on the cell, and an electrode 12 disposed thereon. Thereby, a lens having a wide range of structural dimensions can be obtained, and functions of controlling the wavefront of incident light or compensating the aberration in an optical element can be imparted to the lens.
