PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element that is advantageous to a camera unit such as a film unit with a lens and used for a "dimming system" widening a usable light quantity range to realize an automatic transmitted light dimming system which has small loss of transmitted light of the system itself and has a fast response speed, and the camera unit using the optical element. SOLUTION: The optical element has an electromotive force generating element which generates an electromotive force in response to an electromagnetic wave and an optical density varying element which varies optical density with the electromotive force, the optical element being characterized in that the optical density varying element has a metal oxide layer having adsorbed a material varying the optical density and the metal oxide layer has a≥20 surface roughness coefficient.
