PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To dispose a polarization converting element capable of reducing the loss of a light quantity due to bonding accuracy in a rectangular parallelepipedic composite prism which is disposed on a plane including diagonal lines and has two deflecting means that are not perpendicular to each other. SOLUTION: An image projection optical system comprises: the first deflecting means for deflecting only one of the color components of a luminous flux and making it incident on the first face of a composite prism; the second deflecting means making the other two color components incident on the second face while bringing them into different polarized states; first to third reflection type liquid crystal elements corresponding to the respective colors, which modulate the color components; and a projection lens group by which a luminous flux in which the respective color components are composited by the composite prism is projected onto a screen after the modulation. The second deflecting means is formed by bonding together: a first reflecting means for reflecting only one of the two color components; polarizing means for converting the polarized states of the respective color components; and second reflecting means for reflecting the respective color components.
