摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting tool made of a surface coated cermet in which a hard coating layer exerts excellent abrasion resistance in high-speed cutting. SOLUTION: The cutting tool made of a surface coated cermet is formed by vapor-depositing the hard coating layer on the surface of a tool base body composed of tungsten carbide base cemented carbide or a titanium carbonitride base cermet. The hard coating layer is composed of (a) a Ti compound layer, which is composed of one layer or two or more layers of a Ti carbide layer, a nitride layer, a carbonitride layer, an oxide layer, a carboxide layer, and a carbonitroxide layer and has an average layer thickness of 3-20μm, and (b) a heating two-phase separation oxide layer of Al and Cr, which is composed by heating a vapor deposition solid solution oxide layer of Al and Cr satisfying the following composition formula : (Al<SB>1-X</SB>Cr<SB>X</SB>)<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, (wherein, X : 0.20-0.45 by an atomic ratio), has a two-phase mixed structure composed of a solid solution oxide separation phase of Al and Cr including higher Al compared with Cr and a solid solution oxide separation phase of Al and Cr including higher Cr compared with Al, and has an average layer thickness of 1-30μm.
