The display system (1) may be used with X-rays or an ultrasonic scanner (2) moved over the surface of the patient's body (4). The scanner has a position sensor (2) and signals are sent to the computer (3) to build up a three-dimensional picture of the volume being scanned (15). A first module (5) builds up a two-dimensional picture and passes signals to a three-dimensional picture module (9). Signals from this module are blended with signal from a three-dimensional module (7) in a visualization module (10). This module feeds signals to a three-dimensional reconstruction picture module (11) which feeds signals to a display unit (13).
