An apparatus for treating fabrics 12 by moving the fabric through heat and pressure applying means 20-26 so as to effect warpwise compression and thereby impart 'ease' or stretch to the fabric is characterised by speed control means such as nip rollers 28 downstream of the heating/pressure means for maintaining a constant fabric output speed. Upstream speed control means 32 may also be provided and the relative speeds of the two means 28,32 may be controlled. Undershrinkage of the fabric may be detected.
