A fuel cell electrode comprises a porous metal plate 2 with a central cavity 3 closed by a metal plate 1, means being provided to supply gas under pressure to the cavity so that it flows radially outwards parallel to the plate 1 and escapes from the periphery. As shown, the gas is supplied through a pipe 4 and an electrolyte layer 5 is sandwiched between a pair of electrodes. In an alternative arrangement the pipe 4 extends from the periphery of the porous plate 2, through the plate 2, to the cavity. The electrode may be made by sintering a bowl 7 to an impermeable pipe 4, Fig. 3, placing the bowl on the metal plate 1 with its mouth facing the plate, covering the bowl and plate with powder and sintering to obtain a rigid assembly. Alternatively the cavity may be produced by moulding a lump of leachable material around the pipe and removing the lump from the sintered electrode by leaching. |
