Apparatus for making a composite mouthpiece rod comprises means for feeding simultaneously a plurality of continuous mouthpiece rods, means for cutting each rod transversely into mouthpiece components, means for spacing the components and feeding them to a conveyer so as to form a composite in-line rod, and means for wrapping the composite rod. A rod R1 (Fig. 1) travels through a ledger 1 and is cut into components C1 by a helical cutting blade 9 on a rotating member 3. The member 3 is provided with a screw thread 7 and cooperates with a similar member (Fig. 2, not shown) to space apart the components C1 and feed them between successive pairs of teeth 15 on a wheel 11. The wheel 11 transfers the components C1 between successive pairs of teeth 21 of a conveyer drum 17, transfer being assisted by a guide 22 (Fig. 3, not shown). Rods R2 and R3 are cut and the components C2 and C3 transferred to alternate spaces between the pairs of teeth 21 on the drum 17 by members 25 and 35, similar to the member 3, and wheels 28 and 38 similar to the wheel 11. The components C2 and C3 are twice the length of the components C1. The components of the composite rod, consisting of sequences of components C1, C2, C1, C3 is removed from the drum 17 by a guide 43 and the components are abutted by means of a worm wheel 44 which pushes them on to a paper web W and under an endless band 49 which move at a slightly slower speed than the rate of feed of components by the wheel 44. The composite rod and web W are fed by a tape 47 to wrapping apparatus. In an alternative embodiment the conveyer drum 17 and feed wheels 11, 28 and 38 are provided with peripheral grooves, instead of teeth, which grip the components frictionally (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown). In a modified arrangement (Figs. 6 and 7) the feed member 3 and its associated member are replaced by a rotatable truncated cone member 61. The rod R1 is cut by a rotary disc knife 58 and the components C1 carried by a toothed feed wheel 60 to the top of the member 61. The member 61 has flutes therein and is enclosed by a casing 62 having ribs 64 which co-operate with the flutes to feed the components C1 from the top to the bottom of the cone member 61 during its rotation so that they become spaced for transfer to the wheel 11. |
