<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which adopts a contact electrifying method and is capable of efficiently cleaning the surface of a contact electrifying member. <P>SOLUTION: An image carrier 10, a contact electrifying member 11, an exposing means, a developing means 12, a transfer member 13, an image carrier cleaning means (cleaning blade) 15 and a cleaning process control means are provided to the image forming apparatus. In a non-image formation period, this cleaning process control means performs a series of cleaning processes including the steps of: applying voltage of polarity reverse to that in image formation from the contact electrifying member 11 to the surface of the image carrier 10; transferring matter attached on the contact electrifying member 11 to the image carrier 10; applying the voltage of the polarity reverse to that in the image formation from the transfer member 13 to a transfer material 16; and transferring the matter attached to the image carrier 10 to the transfer material 16. Thus small particle toner and additives which cannot be eliminated by the cleaning blade 15a can be efficiently eliminated by preventing the small particle toner and additives from attaching and remaining to the contact electrifying member. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
