PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data backup method and device for improving a data transfer rate. SOLUTION: This backup device is provided with: a first process for designating a plurality of data transfer lengths for a plurality of targets to perform dummy-read of the data from the targets; a second process for measuring the data transfer efficiency in performing the dummy-read in the second process; a third process for storing the data transfer length from which the highest data transfer efficiency of each target is obtained from among the data transfer efficiencies corresponding to the plurality of data transfer lengths of each of the plurality of targets measured in the second process; and a fourth process for transferring data with the data transfer length stored in the third process from which the highest data transfer efficiency corresponding to each target is obtained. Also, the data transfer efficiency is based on such factors as the data transfer quantity in a predetermined time or the transfer time in which the predetermined data transfer quantity has been transferred.
