PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the temperature increase of a light source part by allowing return light, when a reflection type liquid crystal display element displays black so that the light will not return to the light source. SOLUTION: An image projector includes three reflection liquid crystal panels for red, green and blue, an illumination optical system for illuminating the three reflection liquid crystal panels with the light from a light source by using two polarization beam splitters, and a projection optical system for projecting a light from the reflection liquid crystal panel on a screen. A quarter-wavelength plate, having a cyclic structure (SWS) of a cycle shorter than the visible light region is arranged between the two polarization beam splitter and the three reflection liquid crystal panels.
