PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preventing the spontaneous ignition of piled coal more surely than a conventional method. SOLUTION: In the method, when coal is transferred and piled, it is transferred and/or piled while an SBR latex-containing liquid is being sprinkled thereon. Moreover, the SBR latex-containing liquid is sprinkled on the surface of the piled coal to form thereon an SBR latex film. By sprinkling the SBR latex-containing liquid during transferring and/or piling coal, an SBR latex permeates into internal micropores of each coal particle, thus forming the SBR latex film capable of blocking the micropores of coal. This SBR latex film has a very low oxygen permeability in comparison with an acrylic emulsion film or a vinyl acetate-derived emulsion film, shuts out oxygen in the atmosphere from coal particles, and thereby effectively prevents the spontaneous ignition due to heat of oxidation.
