PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high-purity fluorene derivative even if sulfuric acid is used as a catalyst. SOLUTION: This method for producing the fluorene derivative[ e.g. 9,9-bis(4-(hydroxy 2-4C alkoxy)phenyl)fluorene, 9,9-bis(4-(hydroxy 2-4C alkoxy)-3-1-4C alkylphenyl)fluorene ] comprises the following process: In the presence of a thiol compound( e.g.β-mercaptopropionic acid ) and sulfuric acid, an aqueous alkaline solution ( such as of an alkali metal hydroxide ) is added to an acidic reaction mixture liquid formed by condensation reaction between fluorenone and a phenoxy alkyl alcohol( e.g. a phenoxy 2-4C alkyl alcohol, a 3-1-4C alkyl-phenoxy 2-4C alkyl alcohol ) followed by coprecipitating the objective compound and a sulfate.
