The appliance (10) comprises: a cutting section including a rotating cutting tool (24) provided with teeth (25) which are suitably shaped so as to shred containers (13) made of plastic, cardboard, tin and like and a fixed cutting edge (26) co-operating with the teeth (25) of the cutting tool (24); a feeding section including a chamber (12) able to receive the containers (13) to be shredded and a crushing and advancing device (15, 16) able to crush said containers (13) and cause them to advance towards the cutting section; and an electric motor (18) able to control the rotation of the cutting tool (24) and operate the crushing and advancing device (15, 16). The craps produced by shredding of the containers (13) are collected in a cabinet (28) provided with storage drawers (29, 30) each intended for a specific material.
